– Sash

Sash smiled as he recalled his transition into adulthood. He’d chosen his own path and proved how useful he could be to the Order. He had been doing this work ever since the day he walked away from the burning remnants of his past life. His technique had been polished over the years. He learned how to control his rage and do less conspicuous work. After all, he couldn’t burn down every building he did a job in just to cover his tracks and make it look like an accident.

Some of his targets were not so lucky as to be killed. What awaited them was something worse. Eleanor Townsend was one such target. His usual sneer crept over his lips as he thought about the hell she would soon be trapped in. She hadn’t screamed when he bagged her, though. Pity, he thought. Sash loved when they screamed.

He reached the end of the long dark tunnel. He stood before a thick steel door with a single, dim light flickering above his head. He made a fist and banged on the cold metal two times. He heard shuffling behind the door, and a strip of metal at eye-level slid away to reveal a small, rectangular window. A set of eyes masked behind tinted, round goggles peered out at him, surveying the load hoisted over his shoulder.

“I’ve got another one for processing,” Sash said.

The metal strip slid back into place covering the tiny window. Sash heard the grinding sound of metal scraping against metal as the gears were engaged to unlock the door. It swung inward to grant him entrance.

The_Weight_of_Blood

Synopsis:

For fans of Gillian Flynn, Scott Smith, and Daniel Woodrell comes a gripping, suspenseful novel about two mysterious disappearances a generation apart.

The town of Henbane sits deep in the Ozark Mountains. Folks there still whisper about Lucy Dane’s mother, a bewitching stranger who appeared long enough to marry Carl Dane and then vanished when Lucy was just a child. Now on the brink of adulthood, Lucy experiences another loss when her friend Cheri disappears and is then found murdered, her body placed on display for all to see. Lucy’s family has deep roots in the Ozarks, part of a community that is fiercely protective of its own. Yet despite her close ties to the land, and despite her family’s influence, Lucy—darkly beautiful as her mother was—is always thought of by those around her as her mother’s daughter. When Cheri disappears, Lucy is haunted by the two lost girls—the mother she never knew and the friend she couldn’t save—and sets out with the help of a local boy, Daniel, to uncover the mystery behind Cheri’s death.

What Lucy discovers is a secret that pervades the secluded Missouri hills, and beyond that horrific revelation is a more personal one concerning what happened to her mother more than a decade earlier.

The Weight of Blood is an urgent look at the dark side of a bucolic landscape beyond the arm of the law, where a person can easily disappear without a trace. Laura McHugh proves herself a masterly storyteller who has created a harsh and tangled terrain as alive and unforgettable as the characters who inhabit it. Her mesmerizing debut is a compelling exploration of the meaning of family: the sacrifices we make, the secrets we keep, and the lengths to which we will go to protect the ones we love.

Praise for The Weight of Blood

“A fantastic novel, rich in character and atmosphere . . . This is one you won’t want to miss.”—Karin Slaughter, author of Unseen

“Laura McHugh’s vivid and enthralling The Weight of Blood centers on a mother and daughter in a seemingly benign yet deeply horrifying small town. It kept me on the edge of my seat from the first page to the last.”—Vanessa Diffenbaugh, author of The Language of Flowers

The Weight of Blood pulled me in and wouldn’t let go. What starts as Lucy’s coming-of-age story becomes a chilling tale about the price of secrets. As the menace deepens, so does the tension. Laura McHugh has written a terrific novel.”—Meg Gardiner, Edgar Award–winning author of The Shadow Tracer

“McHugh’s debut is as lush and evocative as its Ozark setting, with luminous prose and characters you can’t help rooting for, even as the mystery surrounding them intensifies and the odds against them grow more and more harrowing. I couldn’t put it down.”—Carla Buckley, author of The Deepest Secret

“In this clever, multilayered debut, McHugh deftly explores the past of an Ozark Mountain family . . . with plenty to hide and the ruthlessness to keep their secrets hidden. . . . This is an outstanding first novel, replete with suspense, crisp dialogue, and vivid Ozarks color and atmosphere.”—Publishers Weekly

“Debut novelist McHugh comes out swinging with this gripping tale set in the Ozarks of Missouri. . . . Her prose will not only keep readers turning the pages but also paints a real and believable portrait of the connections, alliances, and sacrifices that underpin rural, small-town life in Henbane.”Library Journal (starred review)

Review:

Grade: A (5 Stars)

This book is outstanding! Such detail, plot and development, I was just drawn in and I couldn’t put it down! This book really makes you think, and question things. The mystery is really surrounded by a community, and it’s not exactly like gone girl, but it is in depth, and though the mystery element is exposed a lot sooner then expected, you don’t lose interest as a reader, because it’s the way the other has developed her novel. She really pulls you into this small community, and asks you to start looking around. Start noticing what’s different in small communities, what’s accepted, and what really makes up a family. There’s some violence in the book, and murder, but it’s not over the top, and it really deepens the plot for the story. Overall, I thought the author did an outstanding job creating such a good character in Lily, she’s strong, and I loved that unlike some mystery books, the character didn’t do stupid, dangerous things while trying to solve the mystery. She was smart, clever, and did what she could, and it works out. It really gives you a better picture of a realistic murder mystery. There’s also a lot of other emotional moments in this book, that work in the vein of female experiences, and situations that we see and face in daily life, from mental illness to teen pregnancy and we really look into it a little deeper in this book. Yes, there’s mystery but there’s so much more to this book, I’d hate to see someone pass on this book because they don’t like mystery. You need to read this book because it sticks with you, it makes you think, and as a female it really brings something else to this novel I can’t really explain. I enjoyed reading it, I read it quickly and I was completely involved! I look forward to more books from this author. A very strong debut novel, and one I’m considering a re-read of! 🙂

Third Daughter Tour

Tour Schedule

Third daughterThird Daughter by Susan Kaye Quinn

Skyships, saber duels, and lots of royal intrigue… and, of course, kissing.

The Third Daughter of the Queen wants her birthday to arrive so she’ll be free to marry for love, but rumors of a new flying weapon may force her to accept a barbarian prince’s proposal for a peace-brokering marriage. Desperate to marry the charming courtesan she loves, Aniri agrees to the prince’s proposal as a subterfuge in order to spy on him, find the weapon, and hopefully avoid both war and an arranged marriage to a man she does not love.

Third Daughter is the first book in the The Dharian Affairs Trilogy (Third Daughter, Second Daughter, First Daughter). This steampunk-goes-to-Bollywood (Bollypunk!) romance that takes place in an east-Indian-flavored alternate world filled with skyships, saber duels, and lots of royal intrigue. And, of course, kissing.

From the author of the bestselling Mindjack Trilogy, The Dharian Affairs is a new series filled with equal doses of action-adventure and romance, meant to appeal to fans of Mindjack.

NOMINATED for the Illinois Librarian’s “Soon to be Famous Author Project” wherein librarians hope to discover local authors whose “work will jump off the page for readers.”

“Third Daughter is vividly breathtaking. Quinn delivers royal intrigue, exotic locations, and sweeping romance. Not to be missed!” – Pavarti K. Tyler, author of Shadow on the Wall

“Susan Kaye Quinn writes characters that leap off the page… Incredibly well written, the vivid setting was crisp in my mind… As the plot raced on, I was cursing real life for not letting me just sit glued to my kindle, punching the touch screen to get to the next page.” – Tiffany on Goodreads

Excerpt:

Priya gave Aniri a sly glance in the mirror. “If my lady is not interested in the new Samirian diplomat, I know many ladies of the court who will be. I might even try a hand at him myself.”

Aniri smiled. “Priya, you are wicked.” She decided it was indulgent to burden Priya with her worries. She would have to figure this out herself. Priya stabbed in a final pin, making Aniri wince. “I also think you secretly train in the fencing room with those pins.”

“Yes, my lady, I do.” Priya pulled another pin from her waist and flourished it in the air. “Have you seen the fencing instructors? They are quite handsome, and strong, and very… sweaty in their earnest practice.”

Aniri nearly laughed, but her sour mood returned when Priya stepped back, her primping complete. Aniri studied herself in the mirror. The girl who had run into the forest in her night clothes was completely erased, and a princess glowered back at her.

“Perhaps you could go to tea in my place, Priya.”

“Oh no, my lady.” Priya gave her a mocking half-curtsey. “My bravery is nowhere near equal to that task.”

Aniri wasn’t sure hers was either.

Reviewed by Kayla for Sunshine & Mountains

I received an ARC of Torn from Kim Karr and I am so thankful that I was!!!

It was an AMAZING read! I finished it in about 2 hours! It had me on an emotional roller coaster!

I loved Dahlia and River in Connections and was so excited when I found out when Torn was coming out. Then being given an ARC I was thrilled beyond words.

This book was amazing and I love this series. There were a few things that broke my heart in this book but the passion and love that Dahlia and River share is inspiring. I would love to have a connection like that. I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone but the twist this book takes is awesome and Kim Karr did an amazing job!

I can’t wait for her next book Mended!

I live in Florida with my husband and four kids. I’ve always had a love for reading books and writing. Being an English major in college, I wanted to teach at the college level but that was not to be. I went on to receive an MBA and became a project manager until quitting to raise my family. I currently work part-time with my husband and full-time embracing one of my biggest passions—writing.

I wear a lot of hats! Writer, book-lover, wife, soccer-mom, taxi driver, and the all around go-to person of the family. However, I always find time to read. One of my favorite family outings use to be taking my kids to the bookstore or the library. Today, my oldest child is in college and my twins are juniors so they no longer go with me on these outings. And although I don’t need to go to the actual store anymore because I have the greatest device ever invented—a Kindle, I still do. There’s nothing like a paperback. So now my four year old and I make dates out of going to the bookstore–it’s time I love and cherish.

I like to believe in soulmates, kindred spirits, true friends, and Happily-Ever-Afters. I love to drink champagne, listen to music, and hopes to always stay young at heart.

I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Then Jackson starts getting her heart beating faster, and stealing every thought she had.

What if the one man she’s not supposed to love is the only man she ever really trusted? Now she has to decide between being the perfect daughter that she has always been, and finally putting herself and her life first and allowing herself to love Jackson.

Excerpt

She stood on her toes and kissed him. He wrapped his arms around her to return the kiss, and the moment she was in his arms she felt safe. This is where she wanted to be. Right there, with him. She was going to trust him. She felt her body tremble, and her lips quiver at the sweet intensity of his lips.
His hips nudged hers and was able to feel his need for her. That stirred things inside her that she could no longer ignore. She reached down between them and put her hand on his erection that was pressing against her belly. He groaned and tilted his head back. She gave him a squeeze. This was such a big moment for them, and god, did she want to be with him but wasn’t ready to declare her true feelings yet. All she knew for sure was, she wanted him, and didn’t couldn’t wait any longer.
“Noelle,” he said barely above a whisper, “Are you ready for your third birthday present?”
She tilted her chin up so she can look at him. She saw the heat in his blue eyes. “Is it you?”
He gave her a sexy smile that made all sorts of places tingle. “You’ve got to unwrap me first.”

EXCERPT

“Noelle, I love you.”  Jackson admitted.
She could no longer hide the tears, “I’m sorry. I’m still so unsure.”
“I can’t deny what I am feeling. This is the real thing. Here, I’ll prove it.” He took her hand placing it over his heart. His chest was rock hard but more importantly she could feel his heart pounding. “This is new to me. I have never felt so out of control and happy at the same time. Remember when I did my first promo and you asked if I was scared? I made you feel my heart? It wasn’t pounding like it is now. I’m not pretending. I’m forever changed because of you. I cannot sit back and hear about anymore Mr. Evil’s in your life. I want to be the guy in your life, and I’ve never been more afraid or sure of anything in my life. YOU. ARE. IT. FOR. ME. I don’t know how else to get you to believe me.” She still had her hand on his heart and closed her eyes when Jackson put his hand over hers. At that moment she knew this was bigger than the both of them. She looked up at him and saw the tears in his eyes too. She trusted him and knew that he was taking a huge risk. The way his heart pounded told her as much as well. “I love you.” He said it again.

Excerpt

Once again, Patton did not know whether to feel relieved or worried, “And, pray tell, who was your first favorite man at the ball?” he teased with a devilish grin.

This time Farren was in no mood to start an argument, although she did not want him to know how deeply her feelings went. Two can play at this game, she thought. “Well he was tall…dark haired… a handsome devil, that’s for sure,” she teased.

“He sounds like a catch. I know I could not compete with someone like that,” Patton played along.

“Oh no, you surely could not. He was a knight, so charming and romantic. Believe me, no one could have competed with him,” she giggled.

“Well are you going to marry the gentleman?” Patton asked in a suddenly serious voice.

“Well, you see, if he asked me I would. But that will not happen, I’m sure. He is a man who couldn’t be tied down by a woman like me,” Farren replied in the same tone.

“Try me,” Patton whispered, leaning towards her. Suddenly he could not help himself for one more moment; all he wanted was to be closer to her. All the hurt and angry feelings he had suffered from for the past several months were erased and all he could think about was a future with this woman. Her scent was intoxicating; her eyes made him feel as if he were in a trance.

He had never seen someone so breathtakingly beautiful in all his travels around Europe.

Farren locked eyes with him and for a moment she thought he was going to kiss her.

Nervously she looked away, breaking the spell they had on each other. “Sir Caswell,” she sighed

“I do not have the strength for heartbreak right now.”

Review

Grade: A (5 stars)

This is such a sweet romance, something perfect for the YA audience. It’s interesting, lively, and doesn’t take things to a place that wouldn’t be appropriate for the younger tween audience. It’s a historical romance, and the time period it’s set in is so lovely! The author did an amazing job of working in details, names, and events that would make sense in this time period. Her writing is lovely, it flows quite well.

Overall, this is a sweet story, about a girl trying to find true love, and hoping that true love will work out for her. It’s got adventure and romance, and all the lovely things a historical romance should have! The characters are well written, and really feel alive, and the story isn’t hard to get into at all! I think this would be a great book for any teenager, and it’s on a perfect level too! 🙂

Romance A+

Review by: Kayla for Sunshine & Mountains

I absolutely loved this book. I loved the story itself. Madison is a law student and research assistant for Boston’s prestigious McMillan and Shaw law firm. She’s smart, she’s beautiful and she knows what she wants in life. Madison’s worked hard to be where she is, and nothing is going to stop her from getting what she wants. Just weeks before graduation, her father has a heart attack, and Madison has to take an extended trip home, her perfectly planned life is threatened to be changed when she meets Holden Brooks. Holden is a hot cowboy who has a troubled past. Holden’s been in trouble, fought his demons, and left everything back in Texas and now he works helping Madison’s parents with their property and helps at his cousin Archer’s bar at night. He’s happy with his life and then Madison walks into his life and turns it upside down. He can’t get enough of her and she is scared to death of what will happen if she is with Holden.

I think that K.Langston did a wonderful job for her debut book! It had the perfect amount of romance, drama and reality. I had a book hangover after I read this.

It was truly an awesome read and I think everyone should get a copy of it when it comes out.

Thank you K.Langston for writing such a great book! I will definitely be recommending this book to my friends!!!

I was given an ARC of because you’re mine from Sunshine and Mountains review for an honest review.

I’ve worked in property management for the last decade. Married to my soul mate and gentle giant for 12 years, the man has never been, nor will he ever be, the romantic type. However, we still have a very passionate marriage and we love each other fiercely. We have two beautiful children who drive us absolutely insane, but we love them dearly and we are certain our life would suck without them.

I love music. I have a broad range of taste so I listen to all genres, but I love country the most.

Most of my friends and family will tell you that I’m a bit loud. I take that back…I’m very LOUD. I tend to always say what others are thinking and I never sugarcoat anything.

Writing has given me the release I’ve been craving all of these years. An outlet to express myself the way I want to, the way I need to. It’s like therapy for me and my life was forever changed the moment I typed that first line.

She must travel overseas to the Lost Isles, a place of legend and mystery. Only there can she destroy the bloodmage, Volcrian, putting an end to the curse. She is accompanied by Crash, a lethal assassin who once threatened—and saved—her life. But Sora is beginning to question her dark companion. He seems to be carrying a secret; a hidden past that could endanger them all.

Meanwhile, they are hunted by an underground society known as the Shade. For centuries, the Shade has waited for the perfect opportunity to step into the light. Now they are perilously close to resurrecting a Dark God and unleashing a wave of unimaginable destruction. They only need to collect the three sacred weapons, and Sora has already found two….

Short 5 Question Interview with T.L Shreffler

  1. What inspired your book? Reality? Dreams?

Since I write YA Fantasy, I would say it’s a mix of both. Going on an epic adventure has certainly been a dream of mine. But it’s the reality of the characters that I find the most engaging to write about. Their personal struggles and triumphs come alive in my mind.

What truly inspired The Cat’s Eye Chronicles was a necklace. I won it when I was 9 years old out of a quarter-machine. It was a cats-eye marble wrapped in copper wire. I thought it looked magical, and somehow, a story grew out of that. The imagination is a wondrous thing!

  2. When did you start writing and why?

I started writing at 12-years-old after my mother died. I would say it was therapeutic. I finished my first book at 13 (800 pages long) and continued to write. To this day, creative writing is my outlet, my passion, my craft–and at times, a crutch. I can’t go a day without writing something. It has gotten me through the worst parts of my life, and I suspect that it always will!

  3. What’s your favorite type of movie and why?

I like movies with good plots. I don’t really care if they’re fantasy, action-adventure, drama or romance. Good screenwriting means a lot! I greatly prefer movies that are creative, with a whimsical edge: Pan’s Labyrinth, Peter Pan (live action 2004), Phantom of the Opera, LOTR, the Marvel franchise, etc. I also have a soft spot for crazy kung-fu movies. I like the old ones from the 70s and 80s, before all the special effects. So many incredible stunts!

  4. What’s one really unexpected thing about you? Something no one would ever guess?

I play drums like a rock-a-holic! I’ve taken lessons since I was 14. Music runs in my family (my dad had a Doctorate in Composition) and I’ve always been involved with it in some way.

  5. What did you want to be when you grew up? Was it always a writer, or did you have a childhood fantasy career?

I had so many childhood dreams! A lawyer, a veterinarian, a “business woman” (whatever that meant), a musician and a nurse. I was actually in denial about writing until I graduated college (which is ironic, since I pursued a Creative Writing degree.) I felt like I was good at it, but it wouldn’t make any money, so I should do something practical. After working in a few offices, I changed my mind. I’m glad my heart is smarter than my head!
