A plague is spreading across the land. Crops are rotting. People are dying in the streets. Sora, with the help of her magical Cat’s Eye necklace, is the only one who can stop it.

She must travel overseas to the Lost Isles, a place of legend and mystery. Only there can she destroy the bloodmage, Volcrian, putting an end to the curse. She is accompanied by Crash, a lethal assassin who once threatened—and saved—her life. But Sora is beginning to question her dark companion. He seems to be carrying a secret; a hidden past that could endanger them all.

Meanwhile, they are hunted by an underground society known as the Shade. For centuries, the Shade has waited for the perfect opportunity to step into the light. Now they are perilously close to resurrecting a Dark God and unleashing a wave of unimaginable destruction. They only need to collect the three sacred weapons, and Sora has already found two….

Short 5 Question Interview with T.L Shreffler

  1. What inspired your book? Reality? Dreams?

Since I write YA Fantasy, I would say it’s a mix of both. Going on an epic adventure has certainly been a dream of mine. But it’s the reality of the characters that I find the most engaging to write about. Their personal struggles and triumphs come alive in my mind.

What truly inspired The Cat’s Eye Chronicles was a necklace. I won it when I was 9 years old out of a quarter-machine. It was a cats-eye marble wrapped in copper wire. I thought it looked magical, and somehow, a story grew out of that. The imagination is a wondrous thing!

  2. When did you start writing and why?

I started writing at 12-years-old after my mother died. I would say it was therapeutic. I finished my first book at 13 (800 pages long) and continued to write. To this day, creative writing is my outlet, my passion, my craft–and at times, a crutch. I can’t go a day without writing something. It has gotten me through the worst parts of my life, and I suspect that it always will!

  3. What’s your favorite type of movie and why?

I like movies with good plots. I don’t really care if they’re fantasy, action-adventure, drama or romance. Good screenwriting means a lot! I greatly prefer movies that are creative, with a whimsical edge: Pan’s Labyrinth, Peter Pan (live action 2004), Phantom of the Opera, LOTR, the Marvel franchise, etc. I also have a soft spot for crazy kung-fu movies. I like the old ones from the 70s and 80s, before all the special effects. So many incredible stunts!

  4. What’s one really unexpected thing about you? Something no one would ever guess?

I play drums like a rock-a-holic! I’ve taken lessons since I was 14. Music runs in my family (my dad had a Doctorate in Composition) and I’ve always been involved with it in some way.

  5. What did you want to be when you grew up? Was it always a writer, or did you have a childhood fantasy career?

I had so many childhood dreams! A lawyer, a veterinarian, a “business woman” (whatever that meant), a musician and a nurse. I was actually in denial about writing until I graduated college (which is ironic, since I pursued a Creative Writing degree.) I felt like I was good at it, but it wouldn’t make any money, so I should do something practical. After working in a few offices, I changed my mind. I’m glad my heart is smarter than my head!

Sometimes in life….

Things were supposed to get better when Ryan met Lili. I was supposed to move on, get a life… but I’m stuck and lost. Things with my father are not good. There are demons in our closet, big ones. Ones I want to kill him for, I’m seeing a shrink, I’m trying to get better… but my life feels out of control, like I’m a raft adrift on the sea. I don’t know where to look, how to get anchored again, and then I meet Zoe Stone. Something about her draws me out of my rut, makes me laugh for real, smile, and for the first time in years I want to be more. But what will she think when she discovers who I really am?

…all we have…

When Alexander Donovan, aka The Golden Adonis, walks into my tattoo parlor, I know I’ll do anything to make that man mine. There’s an instant connection, a need to know more about him. Everything about him. But there’s also a mystery surrounding the guy, when people look at him they only see the man that laughs, that cracks jokes and makes the world think that everything’s okay, but I see the truth… I see the darkness that lurks so deep inside few would ever recognize it. I want to help him, I want to be with him, now I just have to make him trust me enough to let me in.

Is Right Now

Excerpt:

It took two times of throat clearing before I trusted myself to speak. She’d touched me, touched me. Down there.
Fuck.
I was so turned on, if she kissed me, I would have come. That would have been it, mortifying… hell yeah, but I don’t think I would’ve cared because it would be worth it. My balls ached and I knew tonight was going to be a twofer, at least. Unless I could convince her to come home with me.
“Don’t think I’m ready for a cock piercing,” I finally managed to say.
She only smiled and I knew what she was thinking: Vanilla. It was written all over her face, but even I had my limits for this mysterious girl.
“Then what are you ready for?” Her tone was teasing, but carried an edge of steel beneath the velvet. She was testing me again and something in me didn’t like the thought that she found me as lacking and vanilla as she accused me of being.
“Nothing below here.” I flattened my palm above my belt.
She was back in my space again, filling my head with jasmine and the sound of her throaty voice.
Both palms flat on my stomach, she ran them up my abs, and then across my chest, before rubbing my nipples between her fingers.
I hissed, as the nerves danced and shot fire straight down to my already aching cock.
“Nipple piercing’s then?”
“Ungh…” I’m not even sure anything intelligible dropped from me, but I couldn’t think straight. All I wanted was to throw her down on this table, hike her skirt up and find that hidden piercing.
“But,” her nose moved up the line of my neck, “I’m not sure the girls could handle seeing that much eye candy at the lake.”
No response. Nothing, I just panted, gripped the edge of the table and tried to remember this wasn’t a sex parlor.

Review

B+ (3.5-4 stars)

Breaking Elle was such an emotional ride. This book was quite captivating and has a lot of interest to it, to appeal to anyone. Elle and Reed’s relationship was quite interesting, well written and emotional, it was quite a strong part of the novel and it really stood out to me. Overall I think this is book has a long of realistic story lines, and did hook me as a reader. The story did feel a little rushed at times, but I think the author got in all the important details and was so excited to share her story. You can feel the author’s dedication and emotion in this story, she writes it so well that it comes to life on the page. Having both perspectives is often a risky move in novel writing but this time, it turned out to be perfect for this story line, and really heightened the story because able to understand things from both sides instead of one.

**Spoiler Alert: There is cheating in this book, for those of you who can’t handle it or don’t like it. It does work in the context of the novel but for those of you who don’t like it, before you pick up the book, know it’s in there.

Welcome to Carnivale Diabolique ― or what I affectionately like to call the circus of the damned.
My name is Pandora, and though my face might not seem familiar to you, you do know me. I’m a Nephilim. What does that mean? I’m half demon, what’s my other name? Lust. I’m the dark craving that drives you mad, makes you want, makes you reckless and stupid. I’m the drug you’ll do anything to get your hands on. But I’m not all bad. I fight for light, for goodness and truth. I love my job, killing vampires and werewolves, zombies, and freaks… it’s what makes me happy.
But people are starting to disappear and lately I’ve felt a dark presence lurking around me. I think it might be a death priest, that’s not good. There isn’t much a demon like me fears, but I fear them. This should have been easy, me killing the fanged freaks, getting rid of my pesky priest problem, but I’m about to be betrayed by the one person I thought I could trust with my life and before the night is through I’ll be covered in crimson…

Excerpt:

Crowds clamored, running from one ride to another. Lovers held hands, staring wordless into each other’s eyes, never suspecting or knowing that for some, this would be their final night.
This was Carnival Diabolique; the world’s greatest traveling show. People came in droves to see the hottest gig in town. We weren’t your typical carnies—greasy, fat, out of touch with the world. Our men were beautiful and the women so sweet, just looking at us gave you a toothache. This place was a Goth’s wet dream. We played dress up for the crowd and had a little bit of everything—from Cyber, to Trash, to Death Rocker.
I preferred the romanticism of Victorian myself. Black corset top, black elegant rider bustle skirt with red satin threading up the sides, vintage stockings and boots, right down to the Lolita style top hat. In this get-up I’d have made Marilyn Manson a very happy man indeed.
Diabolique was Luc’s brainchild. Years ago, none of us could have imagined how popular and mainstream ‘dark’ would become. There’d been a time to admit you dabbled in darkness meant a swift and excruciating death. Dancing with the Devil was a strict no-no. Now, to be cool meant embracing every dark thought and deed and making it your own. Funny how things change.
Luc had pounced on this new subculture with a vengeance. There was nothing we missed. We were perfect. Against all odds we’d carved an exclusive niche for ourselves, each year growing in popularity.
This place was no theatrical display of talent, it was as genuine as it got. Not a surprise really, considering we were the monsters that went bump in the night.
Some people came because they liked to pretend they had a clue what it was like to live dark and bad. Seriously. I will never understand the appeal. I think if I’d had a choice I would have liked the ignorance and not the knowledge of knowing just how bad, bad really was.
Others came because they were curious. It wasn’t everyday that you found a carnival run by modelesque beauties that catered almost exclusively to a certain type of clientele. You wanted drink. It was here. Strippers? We had them too. Narcotics? The best money could buy.
How did we get away with all this?
Let’s just say we had our ways. After thousands of years, my kind had perfected the art of stealth. If we didn’t want you to know something, you wouldn’t.

Holly and Theo Release Day Blog Blitz!

The Painter Series - Holy & Theo

Synopsis:

Warning: This is New Adult and is suggested for late teens and up. There are mild sensual love scenes in this book but are not graphic.

When a young woman discovers the boy in drama class is actually the immortal who painted the world into being, she becomes the target of another painter who hates humanity. Holly & Theo is a New Adult Supernatural Romance set in the small mill town of Chesnee, SC and beautiful historic Charleston, SC. It starts with Holly Scruggs in her senior year of high school, after a major downsize for their family that lands her in Chesnee, her parents’ hometown. Her image conscious mother corrects her to the point of brokenness until she meets Theo. He is the artist responsible for all the beauty of the land and he thinks Holly is beautiful too. Together they will fight against Fritz, the water painter who hates humans and is hiding a secret under the high school.

The story continues two years later with a twenty year old Holly and a very changed Theo. Fritz is up to his old tricks and the story continues to be life or death. What price is Holly willing to pay to save those she loves? What price has Theo already paid?

Secrets can kill a relationship. But the secrets Holly and Theo keep from each other in the start of their relationship could mean the death of either of them. Fritz holds all the cards, and raises the stakes in this deadly, more adult conclusion of The Painter Series.

What reviewers are saying:

“The main character, Holly Scruggs, who has been beaten down by her mother, is such an inspiration! She never allows herself to fall into self-pity.  With the mysterious Theo’s help, she discovers her true calling in life and the confidence she needs.”

~Sheila Hollinghead Amazon Reviewer

“The author was very descriptive; it was like she was painting every scene. The book is different from all other books I have read in its genre. Even the ending surprised me… I couldn’t put this book down.”

~The Mystical World of Book Reviews

“My heart is bursting at the seams and my mind is empty now that I have just finished reading the last page… I was completely blown away by the life-altering transformation that we see Holly and Theo go through day by day. They slowly shed the filthy skin of selfishness and replace it with the selfless depth of love that they have for each other. This is a story of true and pure love at its finest, and it is an extraordinary end to an amazingly beautiful and captivating series.

I can’t say enough good things about this series!”

~Shadowplay Amazon Reviewer

About the Author:

Melissa Turner Lee is a stay-at-home-mom to 3 wild and very loud boys. She used to skip sleep at night to write, but now that they are in school writes in the daylight. She is married to a wonderful man she met when she was 17, back before texting and people wrote notes that might be in a trunk in her house. While dating, her then boyfriend, now husband told her his friend had pointed out that the picture he had drawn for art class long before meeting, that hung behind the door in his room, looked just like her.

The picture disappeared after the wedding and was never seen again. These events helped inspire Holly and Theo’s story.

Excerpt:

My mouth fell open. Was he nuts? How was I supposed to answer a question like that?

I balled my hands into fists and put them on my hips. “What’s the matter with you?”

When he put his hands on his hips, I got upset for a moment before I realized he was still doing the mirroring exercise.

Ms. Jones suddenly yelled and clapped. “I love this. Love it! Everybody look at Holly and her partner. They aren’t just moving, they are conveying emotion with it. Brilliant!”

I went back to doing normal movements. And Theo continued to stare at me. “You look so familiar. I heard you say you just moved here, but did you move back? I mean, did you live here before…a long time ago maybe?”

“No.” I half-smiled and then bit my lip.

He was exceptionally good looking. I’d been too irritated to notice at first, but the more I looked at him the warmer my cheeks grew. The way he stared at me didn’t help. It was intense and inquisitive, and he was too close. We weren’t touchy-feely at my house so this invasion into my personal space was especially uncomfortable.

“So you’ve never been here before?” His gray-blue eyes studied me even more.

“Well…um…I’ve been to Chesnee before—to visit my grandmother before she died. Maybe you saw me around town then.”

He shook his head. “No, that’s not it. I’ve seen you up close, like this. I remember your eyes. They’re the color of the sea—just inside a coral reef, and your freckles are the stones of a volcanic island scattered along the sand. Your hair is like the sun setting over the water, shooting out orange rays in all directions.” He stared into my eyes even deeper. “You’re very pretty.”

The impact of his words slammed into me. I’d braced myself for an insult. That’s what I was used to. This was either the way he came onto girls for a hook-up, or more likely, some mean joke to get a good laugh going with the other kids. Anger bubbled up. I knew those kinds of tricks. Those were the kinds of things the kids I used to hang with did all the time. They played them on me too, when I no longer belonged in their circle.

My hands trembled, and my lips drew up to hold in the anger, but I refused to cry in front of this boy. I wanted to call him on his prank. I knew better than to think it was a real compliment, but I couldn’t think of anything clever to say.

The tears burned in my eyes despite my efforts.

“Forget this!” I shouted as I ran off the stage. Everyone’s stares bore into my back as I grabbed my backpack and made for the door. My head throbbed from ear to ear. I was dropping the class, and that was final.

Excerpt

Because I stayed up late trying to finish up a batch, I ended up forgetting to set the alarm. The only reason I wake up is because Dog is running something fierce in his dreams again, maybe looking to catch uncatchable tennis balls. The final blow comes when he kicks me directly in the kidney, making my leg jerk up so that I almost kick him in the face.

“You’re lucky I love you, you furry son-of-a-bitch.”

He gives me a look that tells me to go screw myself and yawns in my face.

“Jerk.”

It’s past ten and I don’t want to hear crap about missing more classes, so I don’t bother to do anything except brush my teeth and throw on some semi-clean clothes. My skin is probably combustible by this point anyway, so showering won’t make any difference. Then again, maybe I would get lucky and catch fire at some point throughout the day.

At least that would lighten things up.

Hardy har har. Ain’t I clever?

No surprise. The Stooges are already waiting for me in the parking lot when I get to school. Twitching more than usual, Sam Anderson looks like he’s about to pick out the last of his hairs from his head. I guess that’s why he cut it so short to begin with. And I swear if Ryan Fuller’s face breaks out anymore, FEMA will have to declare him a natural disaster area. I can see the signs and yellow caution tape now. Warning: Standing too close to this junkie may cause you to go blind from his ugliness.

And that’s the thing about meth; it makes you ugly, but not just on the outside. We all end up ugly on the outside eventually (don’t get me started about western standards of beauty) but crank makes you ugly on the inside, like evil stepsister ugly. So ugly that I almost forget when we all used to be friends; Sam, Ryan, Luke, and me, before Mom left and Frank started using, and all that other shit. Maybe meth makes it easier to forget. I don’t know.

I must have become too weird for them to hang out with. At least until I had something else to offer them, something that helps Sam and Ryan make weight for wrestling and help Luke make the money for the car he wanted. Then suddenly I’m their best friend again.

Poof!

Presto!

Alakazam!

Even that didn’t last long, because now their eyes bug, and they itch, and twitch. They bug, itch, twitch and they sell. They sell for me. I know it isn’t smart to shit where you eat, but I keep everything in-check by keeping them in-check. I mean, I don’t even have to pay them; they work for product, for Christ’s sake.

I make them their own batch, battered down and diluted so I get the most use out of them for my buck—so to speak. If anything ever did happen, if they ever did turn me in to save their own asses, all anybody would see is a few strung out losers with a story. It would be my word against theirs. And on paper I’m an honor roll student who has never bothered anyone.

Then there are other ways of getting rid of evidence should I ever need it, so I’m not too worried about The Stooge aspect of business.

I know instantly when I see them that they must be hurting. In a way it’s funny, these guys have no concept of self-control, and they always end up bingeing on what I bring them. Half the time, they want even more than what our original arrangement dedicated and I have to remind them that they’ll have to pay me on top of working for me.

“McKay! McKay!” Before I can even get out of my truck, Luke is all over me, practically jumping on the windshield like Dog used to do when he was younger. But when I give him the look, he simmers down a bit and backs off. I thinking figure people are watching us from the windows. I know they aren’t, but I still can’t help but think it.

“Dude, how ya been?”

I look around, and because the school day is half-over and the parking lot is deserted, but I don’t want to risk a security guard finding us out here, I hold them off a little longer.

“I’m not giving you anything.”

“Dude, we’re starting to feel the pain here.”

As if I cared.

Then Anderson makes that whiny sound in the back of his throat and Ryan is scratching at the sores that have formed on his arms over the last few weeks and I am thinking: college, college, college. Out, out, out.

So I dangle a possibility in front of them.

Blurb:
A fresh, meaty, sink-your-teeth-in-and-hold-on-tight new adult fantasy series kicks off with King Hall…King Hall — where the Mysticals go to learn their craft, get their degrees, and transition into adulthood. And where four new Rulers will rise and meet their destinies.

Lily Ruckler is adept at one thing:  survival.  Born a Mystical hybrid, her mere existence is forbidden, but her nightmare is only about to start. Fluke, happenstance, and a deep personal loss finds Lily deeply entrenched with those who would destroy her simply for existing — The Mystical Kings.  Being named future Queen of the Shifters shoves Lily into the spotlight, making her one of the most visible Mysticals in the world. But with risk comes a certain solace — her burgeoning friendships with the other three Prodigies: a wicked Vampire, a wild-child Mage, and a playboy Elemental. Backed by their faith and trust, Lily begins to relax into her new life.

Then chaos erupts as the fragile peace between Commoners and Mysticals is broken, and suddenly Lily realises the greatest threat was never from within, and her fear takes on a new name: the Revolution.Image

Bio:
Scarlett Dawn is drawn to all things quirky and off-beat. She believes there are no boundaries for an imaginative soul. Her love of the written word started from at an early age, when her grandmother would take her to bookstores every weekend. Dreams came alive within the books she found there, and now, she is thrilled to share her stories with others who have fallen under the spell of taking fantastical journeys. Scarlett resides in the Midwest with her husband, three children, and two dogs.
