Synopsis:
It’s almost a year since Gaby Winters watched her twin brother die.
In the sunshine of a new town her body has healed, but her grief is raw and constant. It doesn’t help that every night in her dreams she fights and kills hell-beasts.
And then Rafa comes to town. Not only does he look exactly like the guy who’s been appearing in Gaby’s dreams, he tells her things about her brother and her life that cannot be true, things that are dangerous.
Who is Rafa?
Who are the Rephaim?
And who is Gaby?
Review:
A+
I love YA reads, especially YA reads involving angels. I’ve read countless fallen angel stories, nephilum stories, and generally biblically referenced stories. I love the myth, the idea, the world. It’s a favorite.
Gaby is an amazing character. Her reactions are genuine, her character is interesting, and the whole plot wraps around her so well. I love it. What’s so wonderful about this book is that the author takes well known ideas, and blurs the lines with new ideas she’s created and built an amazing world. Each chapter gives you more and you can’t stop reading. You can’t stop wanting more. I’m glad I got this book when the second is already out. I think the wait would’ve killed me. Gaby is a badass, with a mouth to match. She just got the rub pulled out from under her and she’s still going.
Rafa is interesting too, honestly I didn’t know what to think, but as the book goes on I really came to love him as a character. His concern is real, and he’s just a genuine character in the novel that it wouldn’t be such an amazing story without him. He’s the much needed addition to Gaby, and together these two make this story flow so beautifully and it’s beyond compelling!
The fight scenes were intense, this book was full of suspense and twist and turns and even though I’ve read countless angel novels, I didn’t have a clue what was coming. Paula Weston, as others have said, is a force to be reckoned with. She has the power to stand against the heavy hitters in this genre. She’s got a good voice, a wonderful style and this book will be sitting on my shelf next to Jessica Shrivington’s series, and Cassandra Clare’s series. She deserves that spot and I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2, Haze!
** I got this title from NetGalley to read & review honestly **
About The Author:
I’m the author of the Rephaim series.
I’m also an avid reader and blogger, a huge fan of Australian literature and fantasy/paranormal stories, a closet comic reader and TV addict…and I’m borderline obsessed with the Foo Fighters.
